The Three Gorges – A feast for the eyes of nature lovers

The Three Gorges are drawn from White Emperor City in Chongqing to Nanjing Pass in Yichang for more than 200 kilometers which makes it a colossal attraction. The Three Gorges include one of the largest gorges of our planet and it is among the best scenic sites in all of China. It is highly recommended and a must see in Yangtze River for every single person traveling to China.

One of the best ways to appreciate the Three Gorges is by taking a boat or a cruise. Throughout history, many Chinese poets and scholars, have been under the influence of this magnificent beauty and this way, you can have the chance to understand what they have felt more closely.

The Three Gorges One by One

By a beautiful landscape along the way, The Three Gorges are considered one of China’s ten most famous scenic sights. Between all the different Gorges, wide valleys, streams and etc. you can find that there are three gorges which are celebrated much more as they represent the soul of the Three Gorges.

These gorges are the most famous and prominent Gorges and are knows as Qutang Gorge, Wu Gorge, and Xiling Gorge, hence the name The Three Gorges.

Qutang Gorge

Famed for its majestic sceneries, Qutang Gorge is the shortest of all the gorges by being only 8 kilometers long. It starts from White Emperor City to the Daxi stream. Although it is the shortest gorge, it includes many attractive sites along both of its banks to have a proper fulfilling for both the nature enthusiast and the history and culture lovers. With its dramatic and beautiful old, narrow path along the cliff, it is also bestowed with great cultural relics.

White Emperor City

It is famous throughout China and is the best place where you can learn about the moving story of Liu Bei, King of Shu Kingdom, entrusting his sons to his faithful minister, Zhuge Liang, before his death there and more interesting stories about the Three Kingdoms, thousands of years ago.

Kuimen Gate

Has been known for a long time as “Kuimen Gate”, which boasts the most beautiful views under heaven”. Kuimen Gate is the highlight of Qutang Gorge, where its true essence lies. It also appears on the 10 Yuan bill.


Wu Gorge

A deep and peaceful canyon, Wu Gorge runs 45 kilometers from Wushan to Guandukou in Badong County. For its long length, it is also called “Da Xia” or the great Gorge. It features fantastic high peaks banking the water making it a really fascinating place. When entering this part, you would feel like you just entered a picture painted by an excellent artist.

Shennv Stream

One of the best places to escape from the noise of the city, a quiet and mysterious fairyland with tall peaks embracing the emerald water.

Shennong Stream

It’s a branch stream of Wu Gorge that runs for about 60 km. It is populated by a different group of fish and rural life that alongside nature makes it a beautiful scene. You can try the bean pod sampan to better feel the real ancient life there.

Lesser Three Gorges

A famous place which attracts constant visitors because of its natural scenes of picturesque mountains, elegant water, and its winding waterway.

Other Attractions: 12 Shennv Peaks, Small Lesser Three Gorges, Dachang Old Town.

Xiling Gorge

It starts from Zigui to Nanjing Pass in Yichang is called the Xiling Gorge. It is 76 kilometers which makes it the longest gorge and is considered the most beautiful among all three gorges. It’s historically famed for its turbulent waters which have changed today and you don’t need to worry about that much. Now you can simply relax and enjoy the breathtaking scenery and historic sights such as The Three Travelers’ Cave and Huangling Temple.

It is one of the world’s largest and most complex hydropower engineering structures that has improved power generation, flood control, maritime transport, irrigation, economy and many other aspects of cities along the Yangtze River.

A famous ancient village, which is the best place to appreciates the picturesque landscapes of water, hills, residents, and houses, as well as the simple life and customs of local Tujia people.

Qu Yuan Birthplace

The Birthplace of the great poet known as Qu Yuan. A very good place to get to know him and his great stories. Also, a nice place to see historical cultural relics of the War States Period. You can get a good view of The Three Gorges Dam from here too.


What happened after The Three Gorges Dam Was built?

After building of The Three Gorges Dam, the water level of the environment has increased to about 175 meters. This led to the drowning of several historic sites such as The Trestle Roads and now they cannot be seen and the visitors of The Three Gorges could only see some stone holes inside the cliffs in some parts.

Although the water level has risen up you can still enjoy seeing spectacular mountains, peaceful sceneries and, famed historical attractions.
